Launched in 2020 by cellist/writer Hattie Butterworth, Things Musicians Don't Talk About is platform in a response to the ongoing taboo around mental illness and vulnerability within the classical music profession.

Now in its second year, Rebecca has joined TMDTA as co-host. We continue to speak with renowned classical artists covering topics such as gender discrimination, financial disadvantage, mental illness and hearing loss, among many others.

Our aim is to share the stories of musicians, and those that work in the arts/creative industries. Supporting the voice of disabled, BAME and LGBTQ musicians, the podcast is encouraging a shift away from the traditionally stigmatised culture that classical music can still demonstrate. Both through the podcast and blog we hope to connect to anyone who may be struggling in whatever capacity, or those who are simply curious! This may be issues around mental health, money struggles, failure, injury, loneliness and more. We will talk about anything that needs to be heard, without exception.

Hattie and Rebecca have worked in collaboration with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music, Conservatoires UK Student Network, the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine, and Her Ensemble to name a handful.
